Delaware, the first state admitted to the Union and the second smallest state in the United States, is located between the Delaware Bay and Chesapeake Bay. Delaware is nine miles long. The state measures thirty-five miles at its widest and nine miles at its narrowest. Delaware’s major employers are the government, education, pharmaceutical companies and chemical companies. Delaware also hosts one of the largest Air Force bases in the United States, Dover Air Force Base.
In addition to being the home of Dover Air Force Base, Dover is the capital of Delaware. Wesley College and Delaware State University are also located in Dover, as is the Delaware State Museum. Other cities and towns in the state include New Castle, which has a number of historical landmarks such as Old New Castle Court House, the first state house of Delaware; Lewes, a popular beach city; and Wilmington, the location of Delaware Park, a leading thoroughbred and harness race track.
Delaware has fourteen state parks that offer hiking trails, birding, camping, water sports and historical points of interest. These parks include Fenwick Island State Park, Fort Delaware State Park, and Delaware Seashore State Park.
