Alvin, Texas is a small city, but is the hometown of two notable people, including Baseball Hall of Fame member Nolan Ryan and Dr. F. R. Winn, reporter nationally praised for his 1898 Cuban Report to Theodore Roosevelt and his eyewitness account of the battle of Santiago. He had a distinguished record as a medical corpsman in World War I, and through this gained international recognition and requests for assistance from foreign governments.

One of Alvin’s selling points is its affordable housing: as of the year 2000, the median home value for vacant homes was $77,500, and in 2005, the average price for a newly constructed home was $98,400. With a population of a little over 21,000, the city is small, but has several medical centers, airports, and schools, including Alvin Community College.
