Originally a railroad town, Clovis, California is enjoying a rebirth of sorts—several buildings in the town’s center have been renovated, and along Clovis Avenue, the historic main street, many of the older storefronts have been restored. Meanwhile many of the newer stores have been given fronts in the style of the Old West. Located halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Clovis borders Fresno and is nestled in the rich San Joaquin Valley. The city also lies at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, earning it the nickname “Gateway to the Sierras.” At the Sierra Nevada mountain range, visitors can check out Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia national parks. The city’s motto is “Clovis: A Way of Life,” and the town pays tribute to its Western heritage with its annual rodeo, held the last week of April. The event starts with a parade on Saturday morning, followed by the rodeo that afternoon and all day Sunday. Thanks to the city’s steadily growing population, real estate listings are plentiful. There were 1,300 permits issued in 2005 for single-family structures, at an average cost of just over $250,000.
