If you’re looking to relocate to a small town with a high median income and beautiful countryside, Dickerson, Maryland is the place to go. With fewer than 2,000 people calling Dickerson home, this suburb of Washington, D.C. and Virginia lies in the heart of Montgomery County and is a horse lover’s paradise. The city’s only elementary school, Monocacy Elementary, enrolls approximately 230 students each year and offers kindergarten through fifth grade classes. Don’t expect a cosmopolitan city when you arrive, however; Dickerson has only one store and a gas station.

There are only single family houses in this town—no condominiums or town homes. An abundance of land, few people, and a quarry that many years ago produced curbstones for the D.C. area, are Dickerson’s highlights. Real estate agents from the area will tell you that Dickerson is first and foremost a farming community, whose residents enjoy the occasional fox hunting excursion. There is a local electric generating plant near the Potomac River, but the area is sparsely populated and has no rapid transit. Route 28 runs through the town and leads to Virginia via the Point of Rocks Bridge. To get to Frederick, Maryland (the closest large city) take Route 15 or Route 85. Meanwhile, Washington, D.C. is a mere 30 miles away.

This is a historic site, as it was once a stronghold and a signal point for Union Forces during the Civil War. Go to the top of Lookout Mountain, the highest point in Montgomery County, for a breathtaking view of what lies below—a wonderful small town with a true small-town feel.
