Katy, Texas was founded in the 19th century when the original settlement of Cane Island changed its name to reflect the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) Railroad that ran through the town. In the 1970s, the Texas Oil Boom and the westward expansion of the Houston Energy Corridor along Interstate 10 fueled a corresponding real estate boom in Katy and the Katy area.

Today, Katy is a city of approximately 11,000, but the surrounding Katy area is where the majority of recent growth has taken place. Katy is a fast-growing city in the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area of southeast Texas. The greater Katy area, with a population of 175,000 including the City of Katy, is a hotbed of new home construction. According to local realtors and real estate agents, a significant number of buyers have come to Katy from Houston and the Gulf Coast region.

The Katy area began to see the development of planned suburban neighborhoods in the 1970s, and their success has led to additional homes, townhomes, and condominiums in new developments such as Cinco Ranch and Grand Lakes.

One of the main attractions in Katy is the huge Katy Mills Mall, one of the largest enclosed malls in Texas. Two more large malls are under construction, and upon completion they are expected to both boost local employment and act as a retail magnet, luring shoppers from miles around. It certainly seems that life in Katy is good, and getting better all the time!
