Laguna Woods was recently incorporated as a city in Orange County. Unique for its planning and zoning, the average age in Laguna Woods is 78. Because it began as a retirement community focused around providing leisure activities, stimulating opportunities, and a safe and beautiful place in which to live and retire, Laguna Woods has continued that tradition of focusing on being a wonderful place for senior citizens to live.

Ten miles from the coast, the city consists of four square miles, of which Leisure World, the senior citizen gated community that started the city, makes up nearly 90%. The rest of the city is made up of more senior communities and commerce centers. Because of its unique zoning, Laguna Woods is overwhelmingly made up of condominiums and co-ops. There are several types of condominiums and co-ops available, with varying amenities and levels of built-in care (such as nursing, medicine dispensing, bathing, etc.).

There are no new buildings being constructed because all of the land that is zoned for residential use has already been filled, but the existing areas are well-maintained and constantly updated. Real estate agents or realtors in Laguna Woods constantly have listings of openings in the city’s many condominiums and co-ops. Keep in mind, though, that this community is quite unique in that it caters to the fifty-five-plus age group.
